Tonkon is a ramen restaurant in Higashi-Tateishi, Katsushika City. Its menu includes pork soba, with a savoury broth and tender chashu, as well as pork-fat mala soba topped with a thick, richly flavoured sauce.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Along Okudo Kaido in Higashi-Tateishi, Katsushika City, Tonkon serves ramen that puts pork flavour centre stage. The bowls look hearty, with pork fat floating on top, but the broth’s dashi comes through clearly, keeping the finish from feeling too heavy. The signature pork soba pairs a rich yet easy-to-drink soy sauce and tonkotsu broth with curly, medium-thick noodles scented with wheat. Chashu so tender it breaks apart with chopsticks adds to the sense of satisfaction.
For a more intense bowl, try the pork-fat mala soba, topped generously with a thick, smooth mala sauce. Its pronounced numbing spice and heat are balanced by the richness of the pork fat. Many diners also enjoy the remaining sauce with rice. Other options include the substantial Poirō and the mini mayo chashu rice bowl, so there are choices for different appetites and moods.
Rock and punk music chosen by the owner plays in the background, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Counter seating makes the restaurant an easy option for solo diners. The owner handles everything from cooking to clearing up, however, so food may take longer to arrive when it is busy. Payment is cash only; allow enough time and bring cash.
